Originally called The George Inn it was the main coaching inn on the Weston to Wells Road. One traveller noted its name in 1755 as The George & Dragon.

In 1830 High Cross Street was changed to Bath Street to honour Lord Bath who had paid to restore the Market Cross which still stands opposite the Hotel today. It was then that the hotel was renamed The Bath Arms Hotel. Several notable people have either stayed or dined at the hotel, including Hannah More in 1789 as she prepared to open her Sunday School. In 1784 the poets Coleridge and Southey stayed while walking from Bristol to Huntspill and awoke to find the innkeeper had bolted their bedroom door in fear that the pair might rob him in the night!

In more modern times, King George VI had lunch in the hotel in April 1941, and a commemorative plaque is mounted in the hotel to mark this occasion.

In the 1940s the hotel had its own petrol pump and overnight garaging for guests, but sadly this has now gone.
